The Approaches for China to Offset the Gap Between Supply and Demand of Future Timber
Date£º2007-1-23 17:29:33 Hit£º
nterprises to invest abroad to develop and cultivate forest resources and build timber processing bases

China mainly lacks of high quality and large diameter timber resources, especially precious hardwood resources for high grade furniture, plywood and solid wood floors. This kind of timber is difficult to be mature in a short time due to its long growth cycle so China should encourage qualified enterprises to invest abroad to develop and cultivate forest resources and build timber processing bases on the spot in accordance with the principles of mutual benefit, win-win cooperation. Thus, it is favorable not only for the development of local economy but also for the improvement of resident¡¯s living standard while the demand for high quality and large diameter timber resources can be met in China and the pressure of rapid wood products exporting will be mitigated.

¢ŞPlan to develop high quality and large diameter timber resources step by step

China¡¯s forest resources feature much of middle and young age forests, little mature and over matured forest, much of small diameter trees and little large diameter trees, much of softwood and little hardwood, much of low quality trees and little precious trees. This kind of forest resources structure cannot meet the market demand for timber. Therefore, China should make a plan to develop high quality and large diameter timber resources, especially to develop hardwood plantation bases step by step while it endeavors to develop fast growing and high yielding timber plantation. Realization of high quality and large diameter timber resources is a long-term and gradual process. Thus, this kind of timber resources urgently needed by China¡¯s market have to depend on international market in the near future.
