The State Forestry Administration recently released forestry resource inventory results of China¡¯s seven provinces (Shanxi, Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Jiangsu, Guangxi, Guizhou and Ningxia) in 2005. The results indicate that seven provinces¡¯ forest resources show a good trend in terms of volume, quality and structure, and objectively reflect that the following remarkable achievements have been made by development of forestry major programme, forestry classification management and reform of forest property right system since China implements its forestry development strategy featuring ecological construction.
1.The forest area increase. The net increase of seven provinces¡¯ forest area and stocking volume is 3.98 million hectares and 236.63 million m3 respectively. Remarkable effects have been made in terms of artificial afforestation, hillside enclosure for forest cultivation and forest management and conservation.
2.Forest quality improved. The stocking volume and the number of tree per hectare of seven provinces¡¯ arbor forest increase 3.48 m3 and 74. The average canopy density rise slightly.
3.The structure of forest species gradually tend to reasonable. The proportion of seven provinces¡¯ protective forest area climbs 37 percentage points. The proportion of timber forest area decreases 36 percentage points.
4.Non-public owned forestry develops rapidly. The proportion of non-public owned forest area among seven provinces¡¯ forest area is 24%, up 6 percentage points.
The inventory results show that not higher level of China¡¯s forest resources management, lower forest quality and poor function of forest ecological system remain unchanged. For example, the average stocking volume of seven provinces¡¯ arbor forests is only 68.2 m3 per hectare, diameter at breast high (DBH) is only 12.5 cm, average canopy density is less than 0.6.
Therefore, it is still China¡¯s a long-term and arduous task to strengthen forest resources cultivation, improve the level of scientific management, establish efficient and stable forest ecological system and promote harmonious development of forestry ecological system and industrial system.
